Leeds Rhinos: Giants’ transfer-listed forward Ferres is not on Rhinos’ radar

TREBLE WINNERS Leeds Rhinos will not be signing Huddersfield Giants’ transfer-listed England forward Brett Ferres, chief executive Gary Hetherington says.

Rhinos have been linked with Ferres, who was made available by Huddersfield following allegations about his behaviour off the field.

The former Bradford Bulls, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats and Castleford Tigers back-rower is highly rated and impressed in this year’s Test series against New Zealand.

But Hetherington said Rhinos have no room for him in their squad.

Leeds’ 25-man first-team group for next year was confirmed last month and Hetherington insisted: “We aren’t pursuing Brett Ferres.”

The Leeds chief executive also reckons that Ferres could well struggle to find a new club at this stage of the pre-season programme.

He added: “If he had been transfer-listed three months ago I think there would have been quite a keen competition to secure him, both here and overseas. But at this stage for any team to fit him into their squad will be difficult, unless they have created space. That is something we have done in the past, but not this year.

“It will be hard for anybody to fit him in without doing what South Sydney have with Sam Burgess, which is pay to sign him and also pay for two of their best players to go to create room for him.”
