Morley Old Hall
This has not been the year of selling the grand house; interestingly there have been lots of quirky and interesting homes which I have visited throughout 2015 but not many manor houses like this one, probably because why would you really ever want to move?
Morley Old Hall offers a fantastic opportunity to own such an impressive property which is just 12 miles from the city centre and ideal for access out onto the A11 if you need to commute to London or Cambridge.
It has that beautiful approach which takes you down a long tree lined drive right to the front of the house with its double fronted bays boasting those glorious crow-step gables – all in perfect symmetry.
Imagine driving down to this vista every day after work and yes, you know you’ve made it in life because nothing beats coming home to something as beautiful as this.
Morley Old Hall
The house comes with, not surprisingly, an impeccable history, dating from the late 16th century. It was built by the Sedley family who acquired it in 1545 and they owned it until around 1790.
This property is particularly impressive because it is enclosed by an Ango Saxon moat, probably dug 700 years ago to make the walls for an earlier dwelling.
The house has passed through various hands over the years including Field Marshall, the First Lord Ironside who was Chief of the Imperial General Staff in May 1940 and commander-in-chief of the home forces during the second world war.
Other owners include Janet Shand Kydd, first wife of Peter Shand Kydd and stepfather to the late Diana, Princess of Wales.
Morley Old Hall
The house is situated in just over half an acre of garden island but its land stretches to as much as 32 acres with three holiday cottages, traditional barns and stabling as well as paddocks and woodland – so it is really private and secluded yet you really are only down the road from civilisation.
The current owners bought the house in 2010 and it has been refurbished including re-landscaping the gardens, upgrading the plumbing and creating two ground floor bedrooms with en suites.
However, as you walk through the house, it offers all those fantastic Elizabethan features that make houses like this so special including mullion leaded windows, magnificent fireplaces and wide timber flooring.
Yet surprisingly this is a manageable house that, although has the feeling of grandeur, is indeed ideal as a family home.
Morley Old Hall
It offers plenty of space on the ground floor with a dining hall, drawing room and large country kitchen and then bedrooms over the next two floors with a large master and two more as well as a first floor sitting room on the first floor and a further bedroom with a dressing room and en sute, a games/sitting room/bedroom on the top floor.
You have the exposed timbers and beams which really make this house quite lovely and outside there are three separate cottages and outbuildings.
This is a country house which is ideal for the modern family and would make 2016 a very happy new year for someone.
