Fresh plans to redevelop the former Greyfrairs Monastery in Uddingston have been lodged with South Lanarkshire Council.

It’s proposed to convert the listed building into nine flats and build 20 detached houses on the surrounding ground.

A report by architects LBG Waterston on behalf of Townfield Construction Limited stated: “It is the intention to restore the property to its former grandeur.”

The monastery building, off Blantyre Farm Road, has a picturesque setting among fields and trees close to the River Clyde. Over the last 10 years planning permission has been granted to convert the building and the adjacent former scout hall into flats, but work has never started.

Now councillors are being asked to consider a bigger development.

The Waterston report explained: “The conversion of Greyfriars as a ‘stand alone development’ would not be financially viable.

“The building has been vacant for a number of years. It has been subject to fire attack and is of declining condition.

“The former scout hall has been subject to attack also and there is a continual problem with fly tipping at the entrance to the site.

“New, active uses are required to improve the local environment and preserve the listed building and its setting.

“The development will be sensitive to the setting of the listed building and the wooded nature of the site. The site will be accessed directly from Greyfriars Road.”

The planning application is expected to go before councillors for a decision early next year.
