Coldicutt House was built by stonemasons in 1844.
One of Auckland’s oldest homes crafted out of Rangitoto stone in the 1800s has come up for sale.
The 170-year-old heritage house, classified as category two by Heritage New Zealand, is listed on Trade Me and is expected to go to auction on December 9.
Coldicutt House on Mount Eden Rd was believed to have been built by stonemasons Donald and Murdoch Sinclair in 1844.
The Trade Me listing describes the “picture perfect historic” house as one of Mt Eden’s most admired homes.
Only four years prior the first European settlers arrived in Wellington, the Treaty of Waitangi was signed and New Zealand’s first governor, William Hobson, chose Auckland as the country’s capital.
Barfoot Thompson’s listing on Trade Me said Coldicutt House has been recently renovated and is “simply irresistible”.
The house is on a 1262 square metre section and has two bedrooms and bathrooms, a living room, parlor, dining area and kitchen. The adjoining annex has two rooms and its own access.
The listing describes the “picture perfect historic” Rangitoto stone house as one of Mt Eden’s most admired homes.
“As you enter this charming home the richness of character unfolds with warm timber floors, wide skirting boards, beamed ceilings, open fireplaces and a neutral decor.
“Paying respect to the grace and craftsmanship of the era it was built in, all refurbishments have been undertaken with true integrity to create a home offering the convenience of modern living whilst retaining all of the timeless features of this property’s heritage.
“Resonating character and charm this picturesque home surrounded by beautiful gardens really is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
According to Auckland City Council, Mt Eden Rd was surveyed and divided into small farms in 1842. Almost 30 years later, several of the farms were subdivided into residential properties and the first brick of Mt Eden Village was laid.
The owners of Coldicutt House did not want to comment on the listing however the current owner is listed as Nortie Properties Ltd, with personal directors.
The house will go to auction on December 9 if it hasn’t been sold prior to that date.
Coldicutt House is only one year younger than Auckland’s oldest house still on its original site, believed to be Parnell’s Hulme Court, which was built in 1843.
Acacia Cottage was built in 1841 off Shortland St in what is now the central city, however in 1920 it was moved to Cornwall Park.
