Airbnb is a popular option for many travellers because the accommodation offered is often a cheaper alternative to hotels.
But with New Year’s Eve just round the corner, it is now costing up to double the price to stay in an Airbnb room in a share house than a five-star hotel in central Sydney.
One host David listed a spare bedroom in his Maroubra Junction apartment, 12km from Sydney’s Harbour Bridge, describing it as ‘stunning’.

He is charging $1,111 for the room on New Year’s Eve – about 1,000 per cent more than his usual rate of $112 per night.
In comparison, a night in the cheapest rooms at the Four seasons and Sydney Harbour Marriott Hotel on December 31 costs $800.
In Woolloomooloo, 2km from the Harbour Bridge, Pauline is asking for $1,640 on New Year’s Eve – more than 10 times her usual asking price of $139.

‘We just thought – if we get it, we get it; if we don’t, we don’t,’ she said.
Another host Tanja listed a room in her Balmain house, 7km from the Harbour Bridge, for $1,031. She describes the room as ‘fully furnished with one fold-out single bed’.
It is not immediately clear from the calender what the usual going rate is.

In Pyrmont – which is within walking distance to Darling Harbour and a view of the fireworks – Phillipa is asking for $1,186 to share her home.
On other dates in January, it costs $237 to rent a room in Phillipa’s flat.
The most expensive New Year’s Eve share house room is a listing in Woolloomooloo.
Renting Jack’s double room will set you back $2,188 – almost double the cheapest room at the Hyatt.

In Bondi Beach, Tony is offering a room in his flat, which guests will share with two housemates, for $1,111.
His regular going rate is $157.
On the North Shore, it costs $1,338 to stay in a room in Eliza’s Neutral Bay home on December 31.
Her usual rate is $93.
