The anonymous hackers collective has claimed that the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is planning to stage large-scale attacks in five countries on Sunday.
In a statement released on Saturday, the group identified “confirmed” risks or possible risks at events in the US, Paris, Indonesia, Italy, and Lebanon. “The goal is to make sure the whole world, or at least the people going to these events, know that there have been threats and that there is possibility of an attack to happen,” the statement said.
The statement argued that Anonymous had given proof of the threats to the intelligence agencies of these countries. The group reportedly decided to warn citizens directly after relevant authorities allegedly haven’t done enough despite getting the information “days ago.”
“This is a warning to anyone going to any of the events listed below or going to any event with a lot of people, church services included – but the risk of any churches outside Paris/France being targeted is low,” the statement said.
The statement then listed the events it argued are targets of ISIL.
The allegedly targeted events are: Cigales Electroniques with Vocodecks, RE-Play Rawtor at Le Bizen (Paris), Concrete Invites Drumcode: Adam Beyer, Alan Fitzpatrick, Joel Mull at Concrete (Paris), Demonstration by Collectif du Droit des Femmes, group for women’s rights, (Paris), Feast of Christ the King celebrations (Rome/Worldwide), Al-Jihad, One Day One Juz (Indonesia), Five Finger Death Punch (Milan), University Pastoral Day (Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, Lebanon) and WWE Survival Series (US).
“There will be big events worldwide on the 22nd, go at your own risk,” it added.
Anonymous is an international network of activist computer hackers which has claimed responsibility for many cyberattacks.
The group earlier said it was preparing to unleash waves of cyberattacks on ISIL following the attacks in Paris last week that killed 129 people, it said in a video posted online.
A man wearing a Guy Fawkes mask said the ISIL militants who claimed responsibility for the Paris attacks were “vermin” and Anonymous would hunt them down.
“These attacks cannot remain unpunished,” the man said in the video, speaking in French.
“We are going to launch the biggest operation ever against you. Expect many cyberattacks. War has been declared. Get ready,” the man said, without giving details of what the attacks would involve. “We don’t forgive and we don’t forget.”
