Allies and Morrison completes listed gym renovation

AJ120 big hitter Allies and Morrison has completed the renovation of the grade II-listed German gymnasium in London

Working alongside Conran and Partners, the practice has transformed the historic gym into a restaurant with a new mezzanine floor and steel staircase.

Located between King’s Cross and St Pancras station, the project forms part of Argent’s masterplan for the area.

The building was originally built by the German Gym Society – a group of German businessmen living in London in 1865.

After the First World War the building was taken over by the Great Northern Railway and converted into offices. It was grade II-listed in 1976

Robert Maxwell, partner at Allies and Morrison, said: ‘We have relished carefully bringing this remarkable old building back in from the cold so that from here on the scale of the original volume and exquisite roof structure can be enjoyed by the public in the milieu of a fabulous new restaurant.’
