Flats plan for B-listed Lochee church set to go ahead

A Lochee church is to be converted into 16 homes, with Dundee City Council set to approve the plans next week.

A meeting of the development management committee on Monday is set to accept a planning application to turn Lochee Old and St Luke’s Parish Church, a B-listed building situated on Bright Street, into 11 residential units, with a further five terraced houses being built on the accompanying land.

A report by director of city development Mike Galloway gave details of the proposals.

If approved, the church building will be converted into eight, two-bedroom flats and one, one-bedroom flat, with the church hall set to be transformed into two, three-bedroom townhouses.

The single terrace of five, three-bedroom houses will be located to the north of the church, with each house having small, north-facing gardens.

A new access is to be created in Bright Street in order to serve 22 car parking spaces for the new properties.

The application received a total of nine objections, covering areas such as increased noise and disturbance, the number of properties in relation to the size of the plot, and increased activity in a small street.

Elsewhere, an application to erect 35 houses at Barns of Claverhouse Road is also expected to be approved.

The area — which is currently a vacant workshop building — would comprise three and four-bedroom detached, semi-detached and terraced houses. All of the houses would have back gardens exceeding 120 sq/m and private parking spaces, with the four-bedroom properties having a garage.

New green spaces amounting to over 5,000 sq/m — which include ponds and trees — are also set to be created on the site.

The council received three letters of objection, relating to drainage, privacy, pedestrian safety and impact on the environment.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that Lidl has changed its application to take into account the objections regarding new staff car parks at its Dura Street store.

Duncan McCabe, chairman of the Stobswell Forum, said he was pleased with the news.

He said: “We’re delighted that Lidl has taken on board the concerns of the forum and have removed the parking proposal.”
