Leicestershire is home to several stunning buildings which have been left abandoned.

A downturn in the hosiery industry means there are a handful of factories left derelict but houses, colleges and even a police station feature on our list.

19th Century Victorian former hosiery factory, Oxford Street, Leicester, LE1 5XY

Evans Bros Ltd spent about £500,000 buying the disused hosiery factory in Oxford Street, intending to flatten it and put student accommodation in its place. But the council acted to keep the bulldozers at bay by applying for an Article 4 legal order. It had received 230 complaints about the proposed demolition.

Braunstone Hall, Gooding Avenue, Leicester, LE3 3AL

Councillors have granted permission for the disused 18th century stately home in Braunstone Park to be converted into a 25 room hotel, conference centre and wedding venue. The Grade II listed building has been abandoned for nearly 20 years after it closed as a school.

St Martin’s Building, St Martin’s, Leicester

Plans have been drawn up to turn the empty grade II* listed building in the city centre into a restaurant. The application outlines plans to turn the former NatWest bank, in St Martin’s, into a Middleton’s Steakhouse Grill.

Vaughan College, Leicester

The University of Leicester shut the Grade II listed college, which is located next to Jewry Wall, in 2013 and struggled to find a buyer after putting it on offer for nearly £700,000. However, the city council agreed to buy the property earlier this year.

Overstone House, 112 Kettering Road, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, LE16 8AW

The house was built in 1966 to be a farmer’s paradise, however it was abandoned when the family left the UK for Guernsey. It was bought by Careys New Homes who wanted to transform it into 50 new houses.


10, 12 and 14 New Street, Leicester (near Leicester Cathedral)

The row of Georgian and Victorian houses near Leicester Cathedral will be brought back into use as homes. The empty listed buildings in New Street will be restored to bring more residents to the heart of the city.

Packington Hall Farm, Packington, Leicestershire

A small farmhouse in the centre of Packington believed to have been contructed in 1850. It was believed to have been on sale for around £500,000.

Lutterworth Police Station, Leicester Road and Gilmorton Road, Lutterworth

Lutterworth’s former police station is a Grade II listed building and dates back to 1843. Plans to convert the building into a large Weatherspoon’s pub were received by the council, according to the Harborough Mail.
