Canary Wharf food venues listed incorrectly as having poor hygiene

Tower Hamlets Council has apologised after three venues in Canary Wharf had food hygiene ratings listed on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website incorrectly.

After the scores were published, Supernatural , Cafe Brera and Crussh told The Wharf theirs were better than the ones shown online.

The glitch was highlighted after a report on restaurants, pubs and takeaways with zero star ratings was made public through an ITV investigation .

Nowhere on the Canary Wharf estate scored zero, but Birleys Kiosk (one out of six), Lola’s Cupcakes and Kruger scored 1/5 and Bene Bene, Rocket, The Fine Line, Cat and Canary and Via scored 2/5.

Cafe Brera’s Jubilee Place Mall branch was incorrectly listed as having 2/5 stars, when it was awarded 4/5 and Crussh was lsited as having 1/5 stars when it was awarded 5/5.

Supernatural was also still listed as having 1/5 stars, which was from an inspection in June. At their latest one they received 4/5.

A Tower Hamlets Council spokesman said: “The borough has a world-wide reputation for our huge variety of restaurants, which are admired by those who live and work in the area and the many millions who visit every year.

“In fact to have less than 20 out of 2,700 food premises with a zero food hygiene rating is a remarkable achievement of success for our businesses.

“This shows that the vast majority operate responsibly, working with us to make improvements where needed, so that not only does the food taste great, it’s safe too.”

The spokesman apologised to Cafe Brera and said its low rating was due to a computer error. He said Supernatural had worked with officers to increase its score to a four since the original inspection.

In a separate email to The Wharf, environmental health officer Kamal Miah said Crussh’s rating “came as a surprise” to him as he carried out the inspection.

He said: “After we input the inspection onto our database it passports the information at the end of each month to the FSA website and I imagine there was either an error on my part entering the data or a technical glitch at the time causing the confusion.

“I have now resolved this so that at the end of this month the correct rating should now be displayed on the food standards website.”

A spokesman for the FSA said: “There can be a delay of up to 28 days before a rating is uploaded by the local authority.”

There were 17 Tower Hamlets eateries that scored 0/5, including Yuhoki Restaurant in South Quay, which serves up raw fish and rice dishes.

Manager, Yuhua said: “We are awaiting for the new inspection which will be around the end of this month. We are very sure we will get a good rating as all of the hygiene improvement notices have been complied with.”

We contacted each of the businesses that scored 1/5 or 2/5 in Canary Wharf, but Via, Kruger, Bene Bene, Lolas Cupcakes, The Fine Line and Cat And Canary did not respond to a request for comment.

The below businesses however did and were all keen to reassure Canary Wharf workers the venues were now up to standard and awaiting a fresh inspections.

Birleys

Dean Kelly from Birleys said: “As a company, we operate 14 retail shops and a registered and certified Central Production Unit, all of which are regularly inspected by the local enforcement offices and with the exception of our kiosk operation, the location in question, all of our operations have historically and continue to, score a minimum of four and the vast majority a five.

“There were extenuating circumstances at the time surrounding the particular audit at the kiosk, which resulted in us receiving an unfortunate and unacceptable score of just one, but the issues raised were easily and expeditiously remedied and we have requested and are awaiting a re-visit.

“The re-visit is due to occur imminently, where upon we expect the score awarded to dramatically improve and reflect the true standard of our business and the scores we achieve elsewhere. Previous audits at this particular unit have yielded historical scores of four and five.”

Rocket

New manager Fabrizio Banys said: “I have recently moved from another Rocket to the Canary Wharf venue.

At the time of the inspection, we were preparing all the paperwork and the problems were that the paperwork was not up-to-date.

“We have sorted that out now and are just waiting for them to return to check that all. I think we will get a very high score on the next inspection.”

What is checked in a food hygiene safety inspection?

  • How hygienically the food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, re-heated, cooled and stored.
  • The condition of the structure of the buildings – the cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation and other facilities.
  • How the business manages what it does to make sure food is safe and so that the officer can be confident standards will be maintained in the future.
