Marks & Spencer in Lister Gate named in Top 10 listed supermarkets

Marks Spencer in Lister Gate has been named as one of the 10 best listed shop buildings in the country.

Online architecture site The Spaces has named the Art Deco building as one of the top places to enjoy architecture as well as the clothes and food.

Built in 1936, it was created by in-house archtiects for the Woolworth’s company. It is one of the finest, and biggest, Art Deco building sin the city.

Situated at 22, 24 and 26 Lister Gate, the building was Grade-II listed in November 1995, and features an elaborate and ornamental facade.

It came fourth in the list, with Waitrose in King’s Cross, London, taking up the number one spot.

Most of the buildings are in London, but supermarkets in Rochdale, Liverpool and Ipswich also feature.
