Heritage Minister Tracey Crouch has listed Hull’s ‘striking’ Gulbenkian Centre designed by the late theatre architect Peter Moro

Agreeing with advice from Historic England, the minister handed a grade II listing to the 1969 ‘sculptural octagonal’ red brick building purpose-built for the Drama Department at the University of Hull. 

Moro, who died in 1998, was among the leading post-war theatre architects working in Britain, exploring ‘flexible staging methods for theatre’ and designing buildings that were both technically and architecturally successful.

The architect Moro was responsible for the interior of the grade I-listed Royal Festival Hall (1951), the grade II*-listed Nottingham Playhouse (1963) and the studio theatre extension at the grade I-Theatre Royal, Bristol (1972).

Crouch said: “The Gulbenkian Centre has played an important role in contributing to technical stage presentation in theatres since it was built in 1969.

‘Designed by Moro, a leading theatre architect of his time, the centre is a much-loved space for drama students at Hull University. I’m delighted to list it as grade II so this striking building can be protected for others to use and enjoy for many years to come.’

The news coincides with the publication of a new book on post-war listed buildings by Elain Harwood and James O Davies in association with Historic England.

England’s Post-War Listed Buildings features more than 500 listed buildings ranging from BDP’s Preston Bus Station to telephone boxes, memorials and sculptures.
