One day after granting the International Kiteboarding Association (IKA) the right to crown world champions, the International Sailing Association (ISAF) announces that Special Event status is being awarded to the newly founded Pro Kite Tour (PKT), a Virgin-run world kitesurf series.

“The series will become ISAF’s sixth Special Event, joining events such as the America’s Cup, Volvo Ocean Race and Extreme Sailing Series as one of sailing’s premier circuits,” notes the world governing body for the sport of sailing.

“Following a successful event in Fuerteventura, Spain the next stop of the series will be in St. Peter-Ording. Argentina, China and South Africa will host the remaining events in 2015 and both ISAF and the PKT are looking forward to working together to deliver a successful series of events.”

The announcement is vague and not clear enough. When and who (IKA or Virgin) crown world champions in freestyle, wave, slalom and big air divisions? What is, and who takes part in the Pro Kite Tour? What will happen in the 2016 season? Will riders and Virgin be interested in participating in a series that doesn’t decide world titles?

Interestingly, one of the Special Events listed in ISAF’s website is, precisely, the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA) World Tour, a circuit that is crowning world champions for a long time. Confused? We all are.
