Gladstone Theatre’s potential sale would see show go on

A potential agreement for a new owner of the Gladstone Theatre would see theatre performances continue, according to the current owner.

The Gladstone Theatre was listed for sale for almost $1 million after owner Steve Martin said he didn’t enjoy the stress of operating the business.

Martin assured the 2015-16 season was not in jeopardy but future seasons were up in the air. A tentative deal would see local production companies continue to perform despite the introduction of a new owner.

A Royal LePage Realty listing had said the “fully renovated” building at 910 Gladstone Ave., just off Preston Street, was listed for $995,000.

While used as a performing arts theatre, the building could also be used as a rental facility, conference hall, music hall, movie theatre, or for religious gatherings, the listing says.

The building’s features include a stage, seating for 235 people, a box office, a main lobby with cantina or bar area and coat check, as well as a sound room, office and accessible washrooms.

The art-deco style theatre opened in 2008 after Martin bought the old Great Canadian Theatre Company building in 2007 when that theatre company moved to Wellington Street.
