TWO new mares’ Listed chases will be held at Carlisle and Huntingdon this season, the BHA announced on Wednesday.

The races will take place over 2m4f and will be worth at least £30,000. Carlisle will stage its race on November 29, while Huntingdon’s will be run on February 25.

The move is part of the BHA’s ongoing attempts to improve the jumps programme for mares, which includes having a chase for them at the Cheltenham Festival.

Ruth Quinn, the BHA’s director of international racing and racing development, said on Wednesday: “The new races outlined today are a further step in developing an aspirational programme of races for mares. It is hoped that this will help to further encourage meaningful change in behaviour, with the long-term objective of bolstering the number of jumping mares in training.”

November and February were identified as the best months for the new races, taking into account existing black-type contests in Ireland.
