KILLEEN (August 6, 2015) The building that houses Killeen City Hall has been added to the National Register of Historic Places after the Texas Historical Commission nominated the site for inclusion because of its architectural and historical significance.
The building, which opened in 1924, is listed as Killeen High School, although most longtime residents knew it as the Avenue D School.
It replaced a public school built in 1902 that burned in 1923.
The building served as Killeen’s only school until the 1940s and the opening of Camp Hood, which brought an influx of people to the area.
From 1949 to 1981 the building served as an elementary school.
The City of Killeen acquired the building in 1993 and opened it as City Hall in 1995.
