Inside Thomas Peterffy’s $65 Million Greenwich Estate

Digital trading tycoon Thomas Peterffy today listed his 80-acre Conyers Farm estate in Greenwich for $65 million. It is the largest and the most expensive home for sale in Greenwich.

Peterffy’s (net worth: $15.4 billion) home lies within the Conyers Farm, a one-time working farm with stables, paddocks, an apple orchard, and cherry trees. Established in 1904, the farm was turned into a gated community in the 1980s. Today the 1,468-acre community of 60 homes includes riding trails and polo grounds, a tennis court and swimming pool.

The main home, which is 8,000-square-foot with eight bedrooms, features a double-height entry hallway and contains two master suites. There is a formal living room, a two-story library with a bay window, and a solarium with a glass ceiling off the kitchen. There are also three guest cottages, one of which has been recently remodeled with high-end communication systems. That guesthouse features two-story windows and is just 120 feet from the main home–perfect, perhaps, for a writing studio.

Though the estate is large, it is understated compared to some of the mega-mansions that have been hitting the ultra-luxury market. “It’s a place where you drive in and say, ‘Isn’t this lovely spot?’ You wouldn’t say ‘Oh my God, look at that mansion!’” Ogilvy said,  noting that potential buyers seem to like that.

One of the other guest homes was originally the firehouse–the farm had its own fire department. Thanks to the firehouse height, that guest home has a two-and-a-half-story living room. The third guest house contains four bedrooms, including one upstairs bedroom that can be turned into a granny flat.

The home still has what are known as the ruins, an old cow barn that that the current owner has used to host charity events, in particular for the 100-year-old Greenwich Riding and Trails Association. “If you get an invitation, you go,” said broker David Ogilvy of David Ogilvy Associates, which has the listing. He described the events as “Gatsby-esque.” Christie’s International Real Estate is marketing the home internationally.
