Everett Golson listed No. 3 on FSU’s preseason depth chart | CollegeFootballTalk

Idaho v Florida State

Not surprisingly, Everett Golson will have to “come from behind” if he, as many expect, is to be under center for Florida State’s season opener in early September.

Ahead of the start of the ACC’s version of Media Days Monday, FSU released its depth chart Sunday afternoon that will take the Seminoles into the start of summer camp early next month.  And, heading into that camp, Golson will be No. 3 in the quarterback pecking order.

In front of the transfer from Notre Dame is starter-for-right-now Sean McGuire, Jameis Winston‘s backup last year who was the overwhelming favorite to claim the job prior to Golson’s arrival, and redshirt freshman J.J. Cosentino, a four-star member of the Seminoles’ 2014 recruiting who was rated as the No. 15 pro-style quarterback in the country.

Despite the current shape of the depth chart, it’s expected that the race to start the opener against Texas State will come down to McGuire and Golson.

Based on experience in FSU’s offensive system, McGuire has a decided advantage.  Based on starting experience at the FBS level, Golson has a decided advantage.

McGuire has started one game during his time at FSU, and that came last year vs. Clemson as Winston was suspended.  Golson, meanwhile, started for the Irish for the better part of the 2012 and 2014 seasons, with an academic suspension sandwiched in between. The grad transfer who was the starter in the 2012 BCS title game, though, was very gracious to his opponents last season — while he threw for nearly 3,500 yards and accounted for a combined 37 touchdowns (29 passing, eight rushing) in 2014, he turned the ball over 22 times. 14 of those were interceptions while eight were lost fumbles, with four of the picks returned for touchdowns.

The good news for FSU is that the first two games of the season are against a Sun Belt opponent (TSU) and one from the AAC (USF), with both of those at home.  They then open ACC play in the next two games against Boston College and Wake Forest, road contests against teams that won a combined 10 games in 2014.

That “slow” start to the schedule should give Jimbo Company plenty of time to, if necessary, sort out the quarterback situation ahead of the Oct. 10 in-state showdown with Miami in Tallahassee as they get into the real meat of this season’s slate.
