A former Westcountry railway station which was transformed into a pair of luxurious holiday-let cottages is on the market for almost £550,000.
The old Grade II listed Tavistock Railway Station in West Devon has been converted from the former Porters Office and Ticketing Hall to create two beautifully presented, feature-packed cottages that will take visitors back to the age of steam in an instance.
The station dates back to 1890 and is a site of special historic and architectural interest. It functioned as a railway station for some 78 years until May 1968 when it was decommissioned but since renovation, it was awarded “Best Restored Station” by the National Railway Heritage Association.in 2011.
The property was acquired by the current owners in 2007 when it was in a neglected and semi-derelict state.
They embarked on a programme of complete renovation and refurbishment to provide superior owners’ accommodation, together with 3 luxury holiday cottages, two of which are now for sale.
Decorated in a traditional Victorian style, the accommodation at the Ticketing Hall comprises an entrance porch, kitchen/diner, lounge, two bedrooms (one en-suite) and a bathroom.
The original panelling and ticket windows remain and now form a wall between the lounge and kitchen/diner. The lounge retains the original close boarded vaulted ceiling with sky light and an original Victorian cast iron fireplace with over mantel while the downstairs bathroom boasts a decadent cast iron double ended bath.
The Porters Lodge has two en-suite bedrooms, a galleried landing overlooking the wood panelled lounge with vaulted ceiling, kitchen/diner and bathroom with a cast iron slipper bath.
Both cottages have outside private patio and dining areas which formed part of the original platform area. The grounds lay in an elevated site with lovely views out across Tavistock and the surrounding countryside.
Paul Goss of Huntley partners, which is marketing the property, said: “Our clients began trading the cottages in May 2008 and, over the years, have established a highly successful letting business which enjoys excellent occupancy levels, together with a consistent and profitable year round trade that generates an annual income of approximately £60,000.
“Both units are presented to a particularly high standard, with quality furnishings, including leather sofas and Victorian furniture, which helps to emphasise the character and appeal of the property.
“They are also in a wonderfully peaceful location enjoying extensive countryside views yet are only a short walk to the town centre. Tavistock is a typically highly attractive Devon market town and an ideal base for exploring Dartmoor and the surrounding area. I would highly recommend an early viewing for these unique and powerfully nostalgic properties.”
The freehold interest on the Ticketing Hall and the Porters Office at the Old Railway Station, Quant Park, Tavistock, is being offered at £540,000.
The vendors will consider selling the properties as separate units with the Ticketing Hall available at £265,000 and the Porters Office at £275,000.
