Liverpool is second only to London in its array of listed buildings – more than 2,500 of them.
Sometimes it’s easy to forget just how many there are. For as well as the iconic landmarks, including St George’s Hall, Liverpool town hall, and the Anglican Cathedral, there are many lesser-known buildings – many of them outside the city centre.
Grade I listed buildings, of which there are 30 in total, are buildings recognised for their outstanding architectural or historic interest, while there are nearly 60 at the next level of Grade II*. The remainder – the vast majority – are all classified as Grade II.
Historic England – the public body that looks after England’s historic environment – has praised Liverpool for its approach to preserving its architectural legacy. New figures showed the number of historically-significant listed buildings in the city deemed to be ‘at risk’ of falling into dilapidation had fallen to a 24-year low.
Here we take a look at both the celebrated and unsung examples of Liverpool’s stunning architectural heritage.
