Easy Listed win for Connecticut
Sunday 21 June 2015
A lengthy absence was not nearly enough to stop Connecticut making a successful reappearance in the totepool Pontefract Castle Stakes.
Luca Cumani’s four-year-old racked up a hat-trick of victories last season, scoring at Newbury, York and Newmarket before returning to the Knavesmire to finish third in the Melrose Stakes.
He failed to fire on his final appearance of 2014 at Newmarket in October, but despite having been off the track since, he was a 4-7 favourite for his return in West Yorkshire.
With Gatewood’s withdrawal making his task far more straightforward, Connecticut raced with plenty of enthusiasm in the hands of Adam Kirby and tracked pacesetting pair Only Orsenfoolsies and Red Galileo into the home straight.
It was clear once straightened up he had far more to give than those two opponents and once given the office, Cumani’s charge pulled readily clear, passing the postwith 16 lengths in hand, without being extended.
Nancy From Nairobi came through to grab second from Only Orsenfoolsies, with Red Galileo last of the quartet.
