A building that was once earmarked to become a £2.8 million care home has gone up for sale with a hefty price tag.
Grade-II listed Scalesceugh Hall, to the south east of Carlisle, has been put on the market by property firm Christie + Co for £895,000.
In April last year plans were approved to transform the Edwardian country house into a 47-bed residential home.
It was hoped that up to 50 jobs could also be created by the scheme.
But the house, which was built as a private residence in 1914, has since stood empty.
The firm are marketing the property as having the planning permission to develop the care home, but are also saying that the three-acre site could be used for other projects.
Julie Kitson, associate director at Christie + Co’s Newcastle office is handling the sale.
She said: “Scalesceugh Hall currently has planning for a 47 bedroom care home with associated close care cottages.
“However we feel that the property can lend itself to a number of different uses including hospitality, subject to all necessary consents, and offers the future purchaser a fantastic opportunity.”
The house, which is off the A6, between Carlisle and Low Hesket, was bought by a care home chain for more than £1m from Cumbria Cerebral Palsy Society in 2011.
The site contains landscaped gardens and woodland and the house has a range of listed features, including elaborate fireplaces, panelling and cornice work.
Originally the care home development had been given the go-ahead in October 2010.
But the project suffered delays and work failed to get underway within three years, which meant applicant Wellburn Care Homes had to resubmit the proposals last year.
