LISTED: Crumlin Navigation Colliery was completed in 1911
Work has begun to save Crumlin Navigation Colliery, one of the most important heritage sites in Wales.
The colliery contains 11 listed buildings that have been rated as among the most endangered buildings in Wales and England.
Built between 1907 and 1911, the site is recognised as the finest group of colliery buildings in South Wales. The site’s winding houses, fan house, chimney and power-house are all Grade II* or Grade II listed.
The first phase of the regeneration is due to be completed in August, and the Prince’s Regeneration Trust (PRT) are working with Glofa (Friends of the Navigation) and Caerphilly County Borough Council to examine potential uses for the site.
Ros Kerslake, Chief Executive of PRT, said: “This work will allow a sustainable and beneficial community use to be found for the site’s many listed buildings.
“We are yet to work out what the final plans for the colliery are, but without this vital remediation work, there would be no hope of the site ever being reoccupied.”
