Have a look inside Foundation, the new Northern Quarter venue which claims to …

A new coffee shop based in the Northern Quarter says it might be the city’s biggest yet.

Boasting cutting edge design and high-end coffee, The Foundation Coffee House threw open its doors for the first time this week, aiming to put a smile on the face of the city’s caffeine enthusiasts.

The 3,500 sq ft Lever Street cafe can host up to 130 people, and as well as its range of coffees, all brewed up on premium La Marzocco espresso machines, is serving up pastries, sandwiches and deli-style food from Levenshulme’s Trove. Diners can also get their hands on an exclusive range of fresh juices from acclaimed Bristol company Juice Man.

Foundation has taken over the ground floor of the Grade II-listed Sevendale House and the design draws inspiration from the architectural references of the building itself, as well as from an era of industrial Victorian heritage across Manchester.

Instead of any sort of zany unique selling point, the man behind the new venue says it is aiming to do things well, rather than differently.

Adam Chapman

Confessed coffee addict Adam Chapman, from Knutsford, decided to launch the new concept after struggling to find a place that satisfied his needs in the city. Adam, 37, is also the founder of the Heald Green’s QDos Fitness gym.

He said: “We’ve taken cues from coffee houses around the world and I really think that there isn’t anywhere like it in Manchester.

“But we’re not doing anything crazy, we’re just trying to do the basics very well.”

The interior has been created by Northern Quarter design company No Chintz, and incorporates intimate booths and sofas, individual spaces and communal tables for informal meetings and events such as book swaps and art exhibitions.

Adam added: “We have tried to stay true to the Northern Quarter’s style, we want it to be somewhere relaxed where people can grab a coffee, drink, something to eat and enjoy it in or takeaway.

“We’re hoping to bring everything together into one space, so we’ve got fast internet, different types of seating depending on why you’ve come in and good grub.

“The coffee too will be high-end and served from siphons, and we’ll have Belgian brewers and aero presses too.

“It was two units before but we knocked then into one, so it’s set to be the biggest one in the Northern Quarter, and maybe even Manchester.”
