CIVIC CAMPAIGNERS are fighting to save a former coach house and stables at a Yorkshire mansion from being demolished.
Huddersfield Civic Society members say the buildings at the rear of 34, Greenhead Road, in the Greenhead Park conservation zone are worthy of being saved.
A developer wants to build three detached homes in their place.
The civic society has asked for the buildings and the mansion, Longdenholme, to be listed.
The mansion is the former home of Joseph Woodhead, a Liberal politician and newspaper proprietor who died in 1913. It was designed, along with the coach house, by eminent architect Ben Stocks.
Civic Society chairman Chris Marsden said: “These buildings are an important part of the conservation area.
“This ill-thought planning application discounts the magnificence of the coach house. Listing may give the whole property the protection it deserves.”
Local resident Tony Chisholm added: “The heritage aspect of the conservation area would be compromised by demolition of these buildings and diminish the area by removing an important historical reference point from the locality.”
He claimed the proposed new houses would be “breathtakingly incongruous”.
“The historical research of the civic society has highlighted the substantial significance of this group of buildings. I encourage local people to make their feelings known to planning.”
Huddersfield Local History Society’s chairman Cyril Pearce has written to support the listing application.
Comments to Kirklees Council can be made up to May 8.
