The Manchester Evening News and our sister paper, the Macclesfield Express have been short-listed for prestigious press awards.
The Society of Editors Regional Press Awards are designed to celebrate the best in British regional and local journalism.
The MEN has two entries in a short-list of six for the Campaign of the Year.
They include the astonishing achievement which stemmed from our coverage of a fire at the Manchester Dogs’ Home.
Around 60 animals were killed with hundreds others having to be rescued as the fire, which was started deliberately, tore through the home in Harpurhey on September 11 last year.
Kind hearted M.E.N. readers helped raise more than £2 million in a matter of weeks to pay for its rebuilding.
Our campaign for a new memorial to 156 heroes from Salford who lost their lives in the First World War is also in the running.
We backed a plea by Salford-born Cassie Ann Creely for a replacement for the Greengate Memorial after revealing Salford council neglected and then threw away the original.
The category will be decided by public vote, with readers urged to go online and decide the strongest series of stories.
In addition to campaign honours, The Macclesfield Express was also nominated for Weekly Newspaper of the Year.
The winner will be announced on May 15.
