A report has indicated that Spurs are preparing for a mass sale of some outcast players.

As per the London Evening Standard, Spurs are preparing to offload as many as nine players this summer, with the likes of Roberto Soldado, Younes Kaboul and Vlad Chiriches all set to exit White Hart Lane.

This act is to claim a return on the £90 million the Lilywhites spent following the sale of Gareth Bale, and, with many of the players listed for sale surplus to requirements for Mauricio Pochettino, it would seem a wise transfer policy.

However, there is a big factor that does not seem to have been accounted for in this planned mass sale – the need to replace all these members of the playing squad.

Spurs will undoubtedly have plans to bring in a host of talented players this summer, to make up for the loss of a lot of their squad through this sale, but they are never going to be able to replace nine average players with nine quality players.

They will make a loss on the £90 million they spent on all those players they are looking to sell, and Pochettino will have to decide whether to bring a few quality players in using the available transfer funds, or fill up his squad with average players again just to ensure he has enough players to call upon.

It is a strange situation to be in for the club, and one that could prove disastrous for them.

If they do sign average backup players to fill out the playing squad, then they are in the exact same position that they are now. However, if they only sign a few quality players, there are people good enough for the first-team, but not enough to offer good options for the entire duration of the campaign.

It is clear that Spurs have their sights set on letting go a number of their underperforming players, but the club should be wary before taking part in a mass sale, as it could cost them more than the money they splashed out two years ago.
