Cast your mind back to the mid ’90s and you might remember everyone’s obsession with collecting Beanie Babies. So. Many. Beanie. Babies.
Well, you better hope you didn’t throw them out in a ‘too-cool-for-toys’ teenage strop, because it turns out that some of them are worth THOUSANDS of pounds.
Couple Leah Rogers and Ryan Flanaghan bought a Beanie Baby for £10 from a car boot sale in Bude, Cornwall, when they realised it was a Princess Diana Di Beanie Baby.
Ryan, who used to be a collector, knew this was a rare one. But what they didn’t realise until later, was that it was actually a first edition bear – one of just 100 that were made across the world.
Created in December 1997, the line was released after Diana’s death, with the proceeds going to the Princess of Wales Memorial Trust. Apparently, Leah and Ryan’s bear is made with ‘PE pellets’ and has specific wording on the tag about the Princess Of Wales Memorial Fund, all of which suggest it’s a first edition.
Now, brace yourself… they then found another on on eBay, listed for £62,500. Not bad.
Leah and Ryan have now listed the bear on eBay and hope to put whatever money they make towards a deposit on a house.
But before you have a heart attack at the thought of making your millions – the non-first edition Princess Diana bears only make about £20. Sorry. Although one collector seems to have amassed quite the Diana Bear collection that you can snap up for a mere £1million…
Still, if you’ve got a Royal Blue Peanut elephant, Brownie the bear, Pinchers the lobster, Nana the monkey or Mystic the unicorn (among others), you could have a pretty tidy little sum awaiting you if you find the right buyer.
Chances are, if it’s first edition, tie dye or has rare/misspelt/prototype tags, it’s good news.
