“THIS is amazing – but I don’t think I deserve it.” So says Jude Weston.
The charity fund-raiser runs the Every Cloud charity and has been raising money for good causes for years.
Her hard work has now been rewarded with a nomination in the Derby Telegraph’s Community Champions Awards.
Jude was nominated by friend Tracey Bricknell, also a Community Champions nominee. The pair set up Every Cloud to raise money to give treats to cancer sufferers.
Jude, of Alvaston, said: “This is really humbling and it’s also come as quite a surprise. I have been following the awards but I didn’t think I would get nominated.
“Raising money and supporting charities is something I’m really keen on and have been for many years.
“It’s about being positive and just helping people the best I can.”
Tracey, of Findern, nominated Jude for her “hard work and positive attitude to everything”.
Jude said: “It’s just about helping out and supporting people. We do a little bit here and a little bit there and want to support people who need it.
“Working with Tracey is brilliant. She is very positive and I think we complement each other.
“She has a real drive and determination and has a lot of contacts to rally and get them to help out.
“Not many people put so much time and effort into good causes as she does.
“She doesn’t do it for herself, it’s all about helping those people involved.”
Tracey and Jude have organised several fundraising events and challenges for Every Cloud.
Every Cloud works in partnership with Derby Breast Cancer Support Group and was formed to help make those fighting cancer feel better by giving them makeovers and treats.
A number of fundraising events are being organised by the charity, including a 400-mile cycle ride around Britain by the intrepid duo. They will also visit cancer hospitals on their journey. (no date)
Jude is also a trustee at Women’s Work Derbyshire, a charity that provides respite, advice and support to female substance misusers, targeting those involved in street sex work.
Jude said: “It’s very rewarding being a part of Women’s Work. It’s quite different and challenging but it’s nice to be able to make a difference.”
Jude and her mum, Gwen Hayward, also trekked through Peru to raise more than £9,000 for Breast Cancer Care last year.
Tracey, who was nominated by former Mayor of Derby Lisa Higginbottom, said picking Jude was an easy decision.
She said: “Jude has raised lots of money for Breast Cancer Care by trekking through Peru and she has now formed her own charity with me. Jude goes that extra mile and deserves this award.”
