A large blaze has engulfed a disused Grade II listed church in Hull.

Forty firefighters were called to the George Lamb Memorial Chapel in Lambert Street just after 03:30 BST.

The fire at the building, off Beverley Road, is now out and crews will remain at the scene dampening down, Humberside Fire and Rescue said.

Hull City Council has been making steps to buy the derelict property, which has been on the buildings at risk register since 1999.

In February, the council agreed to issue a compulsory purchase order to buy the site for redevelopment.

Humberside Police said Lambert Street is closed at Newland Avenue, Prince’s Road and Beverley Road.

Nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution but have since been allowed to return to their homes.

One eye witness said: “We had the police banging on the door at four in the morning and when we came outside the whole building was ablaze.

“It was full of fire, I’ve never seen a fire like it before.”
