Grade 2 listed building on the Strand, London, gets new lease of life with …

Penthouse storey overlooking the Strand

Architecture and interior design practice PEEK Architecture + Design has unveiled its latest prestige installation, a modern penthouse storey to the former dining rooms for the Adelphi Theatre in Central London.

The resulting penthouse apartment, in a Grade 2 listed building, has long views up and down the Strand as well as glimpses of the river Thames. It contains three bedrooms, feature staircase and an open plan living space, with terrace – the perfect party pad.

The penthouse apartment is one of 4 apartments in the development, more information on which can be found at www.gattihouse.co.uk

The clients, Enstar Capital, purchased the property including a restaurant below, and after some research the fascinating story of the building started to emerge. It was the former Adelphi Theatre Restaurant, owned by the Gatti Brothers, with the upper floors housing private dining rooms. The building has now been named Gatti House, and a ceremony in October 2014 unveiled a Westminster Green Plaque, celebrating the Gatti family and their achievements.

PEEK Architecture were the lead consultants on the project and were instrumental to achieving full planning potential through strategic applications. They undertook the detailed design of the project including all joinery and finishes.

Georgina Turvey, director and founder of PEEK Architecture, said: “It has been an honour and joy to work on a project with such an inspiring and decadent history to it. There were many challenges we had to overcome, finding a way to implement a scheme which would work with the restrictions on the space layout. The result is a triumphant mix of traditional details with modern interventions, giving the building a new lease of life for many years to come.”
