A historic former post office in Dudley is up for sale – in a move taking it a step closer to being transformed into apartments.

The four-storey Edwardian building, on the corner of Wolverhampton Street and Priory Street, is earmarked for new homes after plans were approved last year.

The freehold is now being advertised for sale by Colliers International. No price has been listed for the property.

The Grade II listed building, which was constructed in 1909, was last used as a nightclub called Nulla Nulla a decade ago but has since been empty.

Last September planning permission was granted to turn the building into 21 apartments.

The scheme was welcomed by councillors who said more homes in the town centre would help increase footfall for existing shops.

Dudley councillor Ken Finch said he was hopeful the development could go ahead as planned in the foreseeable future.

He said: “I remember when it used to be a thriving post office but it has been derelict for a number of years.

“What we’re hoping to do now is turn it into some apartments so we can get people living in that particular area.

“We have seen a nice building going to waste for years and now hopefully we have got somebody interested in developing it.

“They would have to do it up so it would be good for the town centre and people who need one-bedroom apartments.

“Personally I would like to see it become apartments and that’s what we have been trying to do for years.”

The former post office is advertised as a ‘landmark building’ on the Colliers website.

It says the property has recently been completely stripped out and cleared, having been vacant for a decade.

Repairs have been made to the roof of the building after lead was stolen, leading to water ingress.

The building is of Palazzo style architecture and is based on the palaces built by wealthy families during the Italian Renaissance.

It ceased operating as a post office in 1986.
