Some upcoming community events in Sharon were discussed at the Sharon Board of Trustees meeting March 24.
Resident Bill Bradley proposed the idea of holding a “Greatest Generation Appreciation Day” event on Memorial Day in the gazebo on Sharon Circle. Bradley said he is working through Highland Local Schools to incorporate Sharon, Granger and Hinckley into the event. He explained the event would include music from the 1940s.
Trustee Brian Guccion reminded the public this year’s Easter Egg Hunt is scheduled for April 4 starting at 10 a.m. at Sharon Community Park on Ridge Road. He added volunteers are wanted to help set up for the event starting at 7:30 a.m. that day.
Service Director Bob Turek said a calendar of township events can be found on the township’s website, sharontwp.org.
In other business:
- Fiscal Officer Anita Haas reported the township’s bill from the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation for this year, which is due by May, totals $14,831. She said this figure has increased since last year.
- Haas reported she received an anonymous complaint letter from a resident regarding the presence of trash in other people’s yards.
Guccion said in order for officials to address any complaints, residents must provide their names and addresses.
Guccion also reported he found out at a recent Ohio Township Association meeting the township will receive a $1,500 stipend from the Medina County Solid Waste District to put a fence around trash receptacles in the township. - David Szalay, of Lord of Life Church, discussed the use of Sharon Town Hall for the church’s services. He said the church has been using the Town Hall actively, but has still been looking for a permanent facility.
Guccion said he will be in touch with Szalay on further use of the Town Hall, but encouraged him to try to make some progress to find somewhere else to hold services. - Cathy Albaugh, of the Sharon Women’s Club, explained the club is still looking for applicants for its annual Betty J. Osborn Scholarship, which is available to high school seniors and college students in Sharon. The application can be found online at sharontwp.org.
- Lt. Michael George, of the Sharon Fire Department, reminded the public the department will hold a fish fry April 11 from noon to 6 p.m. at Sharon Town Hall.
George reported the fire department has handled 18 more calls for service than it did at the same time last year. He said the department has handled a total of 130 calls so far this year.
George also said the fire department’s memorial truck will likely be restored and ready to use this fall. - Zoning Inspector Neil Jones said he handled seven applications since the last board meeting, including one conditional-use application, one commercial building and two accessory buildings.
Jones reported both computers in the zoning office need increased memory and said Bay Pointe Technology can add memory to the computers for approximately $40.
Jones, who also serves as president of the Sharon Township Heritage Society, also announced the society will hold a meeting April 16 at 7 p.m. at the township’s 1840 house on Sharon-Copley Road. He said historian Don Brown will serve as a guest speaker and will discuss the history of the township. - Eagle Scout candidate Greg Kalwowski, 14, asked the trustees if they had any project ideas for his troop. He then presented the idea of adding a welcome sign to the south side of the township on Ridge Road.
Guccion recommended Kalwowski contact Turek for further consideration.
