However the happy couple left the nine-bedroomed luxury home in December as work on site began, with scaffolding and tarpaulins covering the estate as workers replaced the roof.
Plans have now been submitted showing the depth of renovations the couple hope to make to their Berkshire love nest.
While they cannot extend their Grade II-listed manor house, they hope to do major extension work to the neighbouring annexe, which currently houses a boathouse and greenhouse.
The couple hope to convert part of the greenhouse into a state-of-the-art 12-seater cinema for private home screenings.
Some of the plans for the improvements to the mansion
Adjoining this will be a self-contained unit, with a refurbished bedroom, en-suite bathroom and office, leading into staff accommodation, a professional kitchen and a gym.
At the back of the refurbished annexe, looking out onto the expansive gardens, will sit a plush pool house, complete with changing facilities and a lounge area.
An oak pergola will sit before an 18m swimming pool, surrounded in reclaimed York stone, surrounded by sun loungers and a bubbling jacuzzi.
Plans also reveal new boundary fencing around the riverside estate and new solid gates for added privacy and security.
Extensive landscaping work was underway on Friday, with workers seen entering and exiting the vast estate on the banks of the River Thames, with vans and trucks parked on the lawn.
Diggers were on site and deliveries of plants and topiary were spotted arriving at the country estate, once owned by the Rich family and Lords of the Manor of Sonning.
The new gardens will feature an antique ornamental stone water fountain and dozens of beds filled with bulbs, blooms and bushes.
Six trees are being removed from the expansive grounds, including a magnolia tree which is being pulled up to make way for the swimming pool, but dozens more are to be planted around the site.
The mansion in Sonning
Set in four acres straddling the Berkshire and Oxfordshire border, on the outskirts of the beautiful quaint village of Sonning, the Clooney’s new neighbours include Home Secretary Theresa May, Israeli illusionist Uri Geller and Led Zeppelin founder Jimmy Page.

The couple have been spotted dining at the village public house, The Bull Inn and going to see a show at the Mill at Sonning riverside theatre.
A series of 6ft high wooden poles were erected along the whole river frontage of the Clooney’s garden on the banks of the Thames, with a wicker work fence being weaved between them to keep away prying eyes.
Plans show a mix of woven hazel and riven Chestnut pale fencing will be put up around the perimeter of the country estate, as well as extensive planting of oak, yew, holly and box edge to enhance the couple’s privacy.
Aberlash House was listed on the RightMove website at £10million in 2013 but before George and Amal bought it, the property was being marketed on exclusive property website luxos.com with a “price on application” tag.
It was thought that Clooney, 53, fell in love with the area when he visited the nearby small Oxfordshire village of Fingest last June to shoot scenes of Hollywood movie The Monuments Men, which he was directing.
