Sold! Chelsea school owned by Jeff Daniels sells 2 weeks after listing

A 90-year-old school in Chelsea that was recently zoned for residential use has been sold just two weeks after it was listed.

The former Saint Mary’s School located at 400 Congdon Rd. is well known in the city and drew significant interest when word of its availability spread last week.

The property sold for slightly above the listing price of $299,900, according to Rick Taylor of Charles Reinhart Company Realtors who represented the seller in the deal. The property was owned by actor and notable Chelsea resident Jeff Daniels.

City records have not been updated to show who purchased the property or what the sale price was.

While he didn’t know much about the buyers of the property Taylor said they are from Ann Arbor and have expressed an interest in opening a daycare at the school, however, that is not finalized.

“They just loved the building and when they saw pictures they fell in love with it,” Taylor said about the buyers.

The building is zoned for residential use and the city has also said it will allow for duplex and daycare uses for the property, said Taylor.

Taylor hosted just fewer than 40 showings of the former school, but in the end the first offer received was enough for the seller to unload the property.

“The buyer is looking forward to taking over the building and creating a new beginning. It was a really positive experience,” Taylor said.

The Saint Mary’s School opened in the 1920s and was active until new schools were built in the city. Daniels purchased the property in 1998 but allowed the Chelsea Center for the Arts to use the building for its program as long as the non-profit organization was in business.

The organization decided to close last year and the property was listed late last month. In 2010, the school was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The 8,600-square-foot building sits on the .43 acres of property and city records show the property was assessed at $262,800. However, Taylor said a recent appraisal gave it a value slightly higher than that.

Following the sale, Taylor announced he would be donating half of his commission to The Purple Rose Theatre, which is owned by Daniels.
