Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall to launch Harborne Food School

TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is in Birmingham today to launch the new Harborne Food School.

The long-awaited venture is opening in The School Yard, a Grade II-listed clock tower building.

For today’s launch the school is hosting a one-off street food market from Brum Yum Yum (which will also be out in force on Saturday for its monthly market in Kings Heath).

What is Harborne Food School?

Founded by public health nutritionist Shaleen Meelu and former PricewaterhouseCoopers director Robert Smith, the school includes a demonstration kitchen for public and private events, facilities for cooking classes and public sector training, and a private dining room.

The programme for the first six months lists workshops, classes and events, including a monthly Curry Club, Sunday Lunch Club and Food for Fitness workshop.

And the school will eventually include a deli showcasing local produce.

One of the big plans is to work with schools and community organisations in the city to tackle obesity and diabetes and promote the benefits of good nutrition to public health.

Hugh, of River Cottage fame, said: “I have huge admiration for the Harborne Food School Project and I believe they will achieve great things.

“It’s an honour to be involved with the launch of such an exciting and forward-thinking enterprise.”

School founder Shaleen added: “We don’t underestimate the challenge we have set ourselves but believe Birmingham is an ideal test-bed for a venture such as this.”
