The men’s pole vault is the most intriguing events in the Sainsbury’s British Indoor Championships at the EIS, Sheffield, this weekend

Luke Cutts (Dearne ALC) defends the title he won last year with a height of 5.60. UK record holder with 5.83 and Commonwealth silver medallist, Cutts is favourite but could face a challenge from team-mate and training partner Adam Hague. Hague, 17, has improved his best to 5.55, a UK junior record. Improvement would put Cutts under pressure.

Mukhtar Mohammed (Sheffield RC) will contest the 800m and Lee Emanuel (City of Sheffield) goes for the 3000m, both looking for selection for the European Indoors in Prague next month.

Tim Burn (City of Sheffield) should be prominent in the 400m and Jamie Williamson, (also City of Sheffield), is listed for the shot. In the women’s events Sheffield-based Louise Bloor (Trafford), having a fine indoor season, will be looking for further success in the 200m whilst City of Sheffield junior Kristie Edwards contests both sprints.

Sheffield duo Karla Drew and Zara Hohn are entered in a top class field for the 60m hurdles where heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson is in the line-up. Johnson-Thompson also does the high jump where she will clash with Morgan Lake, another prodigious heptathlon talent. Johnson-Thompson is the UK record holder for the high jump whilst Lake is the UK junior record holder. Altogether there are 12 athletes returning to Sheffield to defend titles.

South Yorkshire road runners will be in action at the Wombwell 5 mile race on Sunday. The race starts at 10:30 from Wombwell Recreation Ground with a fun run at 10:40. Entries are accepted on the day.
