A planning application to build eight new homes overlooking two grade-two listed cottages has been refused again.

The development was proposed for land off Preston New Road in Marton, close to the cottages which date back to the 18th Century and have significant heritage value.

But Blackpool Council’s planning committee refused the proposal, against a recommendation for approval from planning officers, on the grounds of fears over flooding and protecting the cottages.

Applicants Newfield Construction Ltd hoped to build a pair of semi-detached houses and six detached houses on the plot.

The application went before planners in July last year and was also recommended for approval then, but both times the recommendation was over-ruled by councillors.

Coun David Owen, chairman of the committee, said: “I believe we have to protect this area, and if we do not, on our heads be it.”

Judith Brisco, one of the cottages’ occupants, said the ancient buildings are of “national importance” when speaking against the planning application at a meeting of Blackpool Council’s planning committee.

She added: “This is moss land that would be gone 
forever and cottages that could be lost. They are our 
heritage.”

A spokesman for the applicants said they had approached top firms to carry out piling work on the land so as to minimise risk of damage to neighbouring properties.

But councillors said they still had reservations and fears, saying the development would have a “detrimental effect on character and appearance of Marton Moss”.
