EIGHT luxury homes are among the first new houses to be completed on the controversial former King Edward VII hospital site at Midhurst.
The up market homes have been built by Millgate, one of the two housing developers brought on board by specialist developers City Country to help pay for the ambitious project to restore the listed historic buildings of the former sanitorium.
In July last year City County announced it had sold land parcels to Millgate and Cala Homes to help generate funds.
Making the surprise statement Helen Moore, its managing director said: “We have always been committed to delivering an exemplary scheme of which we can all be proud. The primary focus for City Country will continue to be the sympathetic restoration of the existing listed buildings, which will bring this significant heritage asset back to its former glory. However, we will continue to retain land for new-build development on the estate, which will be progressed once the restoration work has been completed.”
The Millgate houses in Crown Wood are set in the woodland of King Edward VII hospital.
They range from 3,500 to 4,800 square feet , have five bedrooms, triple garages and large landscaped gardens. The lowest price of the eight homes is £1.6m.
They are all designed in the Arts and Crafts style to reflect architecture on the site including the grade 11 listed chapel which is being converted into a community shop and cafe.
Greg Meier, chief architect at Millgate Homes said: “The Arts and Crafts influenced design was chosen for Crown Wood because it complements the woodland setting and the local architectural vernacular in the area. We have used traditional building materials to achieve a style people want to see in this area.
Cala Homes is building three-bedroom mews cottages and four-bedroom detached new homes, ranging in size from around 1,239 to 3,235sqft, at Bracken Lane and Superintendents Drive.
When complete, the estate will consist of 162 apartments and houses in the listed buildings and a further 247 new properties in the surrounding estate.
