A treasured Doncaster war memorial has been granted listed status due to its historical and architectural significance.

Bennetthorpe War Memorial in Doncaster has been added to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

The memorial is now listed at Grade II.

Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said: “The memorial bears witness to the tragic impact of world events on this community, and the sacrifices made by brave servicemen and women throughout conflicts during the Twentieth Century.

Supporting our armed forces and veterans is a top priority for me and I am delighted to see Bennetthorpe War Memorial being listed.”

Bennetthorpe War Memorial was built in 1923 by Ernest Prestwich of Leigh.

It has been listed because of its historic interest, design and architectural merits.

The memorial is an eye-catching obelisk incorporating high quality craftsmanship in the form of relief-carved stone panels.

It features plaques depicting the three branches of the armed forces. The monument also refers to civilian losses depicting a red cross nurse, a blacksmith and a merchant ship.

The landmark was the scene of a special remembrance service this year in which veterans, dignitaries and residents gathered to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.
