Downtown Flint bar Churchill’s Food and Spirits listed for sale

FLINT, MI – A downtown Flint staple could be changing hands as Churchill’s Food and Spirits is up for sale, according to an online listing.

The bar, 340 S. Saginaw St., is listed as 12,412 square feet and “Is a great place to hang out with friend and family and enjoy a delicious meal,” according to the listing remarks.

During the summer, the business has outside seating as well.

The listing price on the building is $600,000.

Co-owner Nadine Cook did not comment to The Flint Journal.

Although well-known for bringing many college students in during the school year, the business, which Cook has owned for more than 20 years, is a staple during major downtown events such as Back to the Bricks.

Earlier this year, she said the event brings in their biggest weekend annually.

“I think it has given the people a new awareness of what’s going on downtown, especially those who had a bad taste in their mouth or the stigma of downtown, which is not true. I have never in 20 years had an occasion to have any fear down here,” she said in August. “I think it gave people a chance who otherwise never would have seen downtown.”

The business has stayed in downtown through highs and lows, at one point being mentioned as only one of three locations that were open for food past 5 p.m. in 2009, according to Journal archives.

In 1996, Scott Richmond, co-owner, addressed several concerns including parking, fears of being assaulted and vandalism at a Flint City Council meeting.

Several council members said the issue was perception and although Richmond agreed, he still asked for more to be done.

“I understand it’s a perception, but unfortunately my customers don’t,” Richmond said, according to archives.
