The second Northern Open indoor meeting is today at the EIS, Sheffield.

The outstanding Chesterfield junior Alicia Barrett is listed for two events, the 60 metres and the 60 hurdles.

Among her opponents in both races is combined events athlete Karla Drew.

The 25-year-old Sheffield Hallam University student – who is coached by Toni Minichiello – recently made the national headlines when she won £50,000 betting on an eight result football accumulator.

Kelly Clark and Zara Hohn, both City of Sheffield athletes are also contenders in the hurdles.

Drew, who studies Sport and Exercise Psychology, is also listed for the long jump.

Talented City of Sheffield sprinter Billie Jo Harris will be hard to beat in the under 17 60 metres.

Hallamshire’s Essa Ahmed and City of Sheffield’s Josh Filleul, both juniors, clash in both the 300 and 600 metres with Ben Shield’s (City of Sheffield) contesting the shorter race. The meeting starts at 11am.

Steel City Striders’ promotion, the Percy Pud 10 road race, takes place on Sunday and has again attracted the maximum number of 1,800 with several disappointed at failing to get into the increasingly popular and rural pre-Christmas event.

Andy Ward (Clowne RR) has a proud record to defend having won this race for the last five years.

However, Ward, 45, a landscape gardener from Bolsover, has not been racing recently and it would certainly be deemed a massive achievement to continue his winning streak.

The course goes along the picturesque Loxley Valley.

It is a slightly undulating “out and back” course with very few turns making it a good course for those looking for personal best times.

The race starts at 9:30am.
