A PIECE of military history which was uncovered in Crewkerne earlier this year is in the process of becoming a listed building.

In July, Crewkerne Town Council’s grounds team used chainsaws to reveal a Second World War pillbox on the A30 Yeovil Road near Wadham School.

Councillors had known it was there and took the decision to uncover it ahead of the First World War Centenary. However there is some ambiguity about the ownership of the land on which the pillbox stands.

Property and projects officer Nils Omell said: “We are currently in the process of getting it listed, mainly due to the potential future development to that end of town.

“Part of the plan is that I am putting together a refurbishment project. The ownership of that block of land is unclear.”

Councillor Mike Best suggested the council could claim the land.

Deputy town clerk Annette Roffey previously told the Western Gazette: “One of the concerns initially from people was they thought we were doing the work because we were going to demolish it. I would like to scotch that.

“Unfortunately it’s not very accessible. It’s not terribly safe to walk to. It’s flat bang on the A30 and people need to exercise caution when visiting it.”
