The Star’s unique coverage of the 25th anniversary of the Hillsborough Disaster has been short-listed in the British Journalism Awards.

Our edition of April 15 was unlike anything else we have done before – it was devoted entirely to “The Heroes of Hillsborough.”

Assistant Editor Bob Westerdale led a team of reporters tracking down local people who tried to save lives on the day 96 Liverpool fans perished at Sheffield Wednesday’s ground.

We talked to St John’s Ambulance personnel, one living in Australia, policemen, publicans, medics, and residents who had lived near the ground.

Trevor Hicks, (pictured) who lost two daughters on the terraces, also contributed.

We told their story – through no editorial prism of our own – but simply through their own words.

We devoted the first 25 pages of The Star to the sensitively written look-back as well as a back page contribution from Sheffield United’s Nigel Clough, whose father managed Nottingham Forest at the ill-fated FA Cup semi-final in 1989.

Award winners will be chosen in December, in London.
