A listed pub which has stood for more than 100 years could be demolished under plans to build housing.

The Oaks, formerly known as the Royal Oak, in Forest Road, Loughton, closed in August and has been sold to developer Higgins.

The company has applied to knock down the building and build nine terraced houses.

Senior Planning Officer for Epping Forest District Council, Katie Smith said the proposal was unlikely to be approved because of the building’s protected status and suggested the existing structure should be converted.

The building was designed by Arthur Dixon, a close friend of designer and activist William Morris, who pioneered the arts and crafts movement.

A council report said the demolition would result in the loss of a landmark building of architectural value.

The Loughton Residents’ Association (LRA) have said the pub could be listed as a community asset to ensure people have a say over its future.
