Members of a Sheffield community association have celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special walk.

The Hallam Community and Youth Association was formed in 1964 to preserve open spaces and provide facilities for residents living in Fulwood and Lodge Moor.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the voluntary organisation, members of its weekly walking group, The Walkie Talkies, walked the original boundary wall of the HCYA area.

The group met at The Sportman pub on Redmires Road and walked a circular route of about six-and-a-half miles.

Pat Wilkins, who has been a member of the group since moving to Fulwood in 1974, said: “It was really good. The weather really held. There were about 32 of us and three dogs.

“One of the members was one of the original founders of the group in 1964, who walked all the way around with his dog.

“Quite a few of the people there were the original members when the Thursday walking group first got going in 2002.”

The association was set up originally to build a community hall in Hallam Grange Crescent and to try to preserve the playing fields at Crimicar Lane.

Over several years members objected to many development plans for the fields and the land was eventually listed as green belt. The field is now leased to Hallam Cricket Club.

Members of the association regularly organise social events including summer fetes, bonfire nights and Christmas parties.

In 2001, they secured funding to refurbish the children’s playground on Blackbrook Road.
