Clarets supporters group get Turf Moor listed as community asset

A CLARETS supporters group has succeeded in getting Turf Moor listed as a community asset.

The application was made by the Clarets Trust and it means that the group must now be notified if the ground is to be sold off.

Turf Moor is the latest in a long list of football grounds’ which have been Asset of Community Value status.

Supporters groups have applied for the listings to help try to secure the future of their stadium and club, as they will be given six months to put together their own bid for the ground if it is to be sold.

Turf Moor is the first building in Burnley to be given community asset status.

Peter Pike, chairman of the Clarets Trust, said: “The trust made this application bearing in mind that the ground had been the home of Burnley Football Club since 1883.

“The ground and club are of tremendous importance to Burnley as a whole and has been the scene of many great moments of interest for over one hundred and twenty five years.

“This was underlined by the magic moment when the team came on to the pitch on Monday when the Jimmy McIlroy stand had the fans display the simple message OUR TURF – BFC.

“I would stress the trust have every confidence in the board of the club and we are fortunate to have directors who are all true Clarets fans.”

Mr Pike said the trust has been in discussion with the club for ‘some months’ and reached agreement with them before applying for ACV status.
