Absolutely So atoned for a near-miss in the Bunbury Cup with a win in the Sky Bet City Of York Stakes on the Knavesmire.
Andrew Balding’s four-year-old was sent off favourite for the Wokingham at Royal Ascot only to find the ground too fast, but he bounced back to form at Newmarket last time out.He beat all bar Heaven’s Guest – unplaced in this Listed heat – and was sent off the 6-1 co-favourite to gain some compensation.
Oisin Murphy had him in the perfect position throughout as Glory Awaits set a good pace, and he took aim at the leader with a furlong and a half to run. Kevin Ryan’s charge battled on gamely to hold off Glen Moss for second, but there was a length and a half to the winner.
Balding said: “He’s always been a very talented horse and ran a good race at Newmarket. We had trouble with sore shins with him last year, but he seems to be over that now so we’ll move on from here.
“It’s always a nice carrot when you see prize money has increased, so it’s a good race to win. He’s in the Qipco Sprint on Champions Day, so we’ll look at that.”
