Police were called to the 63-year-old’s home in the Californian town of Tiburon at around 11.55am on Monday morning. Emergency services arrived on the scene five minutes later, but the much-loved Oscar-winning actor was pronounced dead by asphyxiation at 12.02pm, the sheriff’s office said. Officers believed he killed himself.

The costume was advertised on eBay at 00.23am GMT, just over 21 minutes after the actor died.

Williams appeared in the star-studded film directed by Steven Spielberg alongside Dustin Hoffman as Captain Hook, and Julia Roberts, who played Tinkerbell.

Seller ‘tvandfilmpropsdottcom’ as in “very fine screen worn condition”. It consisted of a top, shorts, tights and anklets – but no sword.

“Up for grabs here we have a very exciting piece. Robin Williams Hero PETER PAN costume from the 1991 Hollywood blockbuster,” the advert on the auctioning website boasted.

Perhaps anticipating that users may be concerned by how quickly the lot was listed, as well as whether it is genuine, the Scotland-based user explained: “This has been listed on eBay due to the volume of enquiries i have had to purchase the costume.

“This is also the only known Peter Pan costume in existence from HOOK. This costume originally was sold in Sothebys in 1997 only 6 years after the film was released for just under $4,000. The winning buyer shall be provided with copy of Sothebys receipt.

“This is a rare chance to aquifer this iconic costume [sic],” it added.

Calling the item the ‘hero costume’, the seller has since removed the item from eBay, with the website reading that the ‘Best Offer’ had been accepted.

The seller has not yet responded to a request for a comment.
