Another New Canaan house designed by the same architect as the well-known “Glass House” is on the market, for nearly $1.6 million.
The Wiley Speculative House — designed in 1954 by Philip Johnson as a prototype for other houses that were never built — is a one-story home of post-and-beam construction on a concrete block foundation with siding of plywood.
The 2,255-square-foot home on more than 2 acres features floor-to-ceiling glass panel walls that lead from most interior spaces to the outdoors. The design was intentional, according to an original marketing brochure: “naturally horizontal, a continuous experience that relates man and dwelling to nature…a structure that is of the landscape, not simply an intrusion upon it.”

Wiley was Johnson’s first speculative house. The L-shaped layout was designed to be flexible, so interior spaces could meet individual needs of different buyers. The design also had to fit into a variety of different lot landscapes.
The Wiley Development Corp. offered to build the house anywhere in Fairfield County for $45,000.
Diane Jenkins, an agent with William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty in New Canaan, who has the listing, said the house is being sold by an estate. Online property records from The Warren Group show the most recent owner as Joyce D. Flaschen, Trustee. The house was last purchased in 2003 for $1.1 million.
